Mike Gminski

Ever wonder what you do when you retire from the NBA? In addition to calling games courtside, since my playing career came to an end, I have pursued many interests. That first summer, I decided to get into the kitchen and learn how to cook. Through many hours with the Food Channel and many mistakes down the disposal, I have grown to love cooking with and for friends, none of whom have gotten violently ill at my expense. Every two years I donate two dinners for twelve at my house for the benefit of The Charlotte Wine and Food weekend. Bob Foley, a friend and one of the most talented vintners in Napa Valley, assists with the cooking and the wine. Along with cooking, Wine has become a passion for me as well. I have a 3,000 bottle cellar in my basement, but consider myself a consumer rather than a collector. I have also come to enjoy a great cigar every now and then as well.

To burn off all the calories I pick up from this most hedonistic life style, I’ve taken up cycling as my preferred form of exercise. I manage to ride between 100-125 miles a week, weather permitting. This past summer, I completed my first 100 mile ride, finishing in just under six hours. And burning 6,000 calories. Not even going half as fast, it gave me a great appreciation for what Lance Armstrong and all cyclists go through.

Over the last eight years, I have also been very involved with the Duke Children’s Hospital. For the past six years, I have had the honor of serving as the Chairmen for their National Board of Advisors. We successfully raised 38 million dollars to build a brand new facility in Durham, and those fundraising efforts continue to be a priority for me.

I’ve lived in Charlotte for 14 years now with my wife of 24 years, Stacy Anderson and our 7 year old son, Noah, who is 4’7” and already being heavily recruited- just kidding.
