Maryland (3-1) at Clemson (3-1)
Even coach Tommy Bowden had to acknowledge it was difficult to get a handle on whether his Clemson team had shown progress in its 54-0 domination of South Carolina State.
They led 30-0 by halftime and were on cruise control after that. There were some flaws, however. After guiding the Tigers to a touchdown on their first possession, Cullen Harper threw interceptions on the next two. Bowden, however, expressed confidence in the senior. The game was the last non-conference affair for the Tigers until the regular-season finale against South Carolina. The Tigers begin a stretch of seven consecutive ACC outings with a home game against Maryland on Sept. 27. The Terrapins were expected to beat Eastern Michigan, and sure enough they did, by an impressive 51-24 margin. The big question was whether a team that sleepwalked through a victory against Delaware and a loss to Middle Tennessee State and then showed up ready to play in an upset of California would be focused against a mediocre opponent. For the offense, the answer was yes. The defense, on the other hand, has a lot of work to do and has to be worried as the ACC schedule looms on the horizon. KEEP AN EYE ON: Clemson QB Willy Korn — The issue was pretty much settled by the time he entered the game late in the third quarter, but the redshirt freshman showed that starter Cullen Harper can't take things for granted. Korn was 7-of-7 passing for 76 yards and a touchdown, and he rushed four times for a net 19 yards and a TD. Maryland WR Torrey Smith — Smith has already made a name for himself on special teams, and the freshman caught two passes for 58 yards against Eastern Michigan. The coaches like his speed, and he's making a play for more time in the multiple-WR sets. Clemson TB James Davis — Davis scored Clemson's first three touchdowns on runs of one, five and one yard. He had 88 yards on his other eight carries and had a long run of 25 for the day. Maryland LB Adrian Moten — Moten had an interception and the team's first blocked punt since 2006. However, he also injured his wrist, so his status for the ACC opener against Clemson is up in the air. It didn't look good as of Sunday, as there's a possibility that he has torn ligaments, but if that's the case, at least he'll head into rehab coming off a memorable performance. |
